Children's finger gloves or mittens?

Children's winter gloves can be either finger gloves or mittens. Both types of gloves have their advantages and disadvantages.

Children's finger gloves offer much more feel in the hands, allow for better handling of smaller objects, and are more suitable for skiing due to the more comfortable grip of the sticks.

Children's mittens, on the other hand, generally provide more warmth to the fingers and are easier to put on. Some types of mittens also have a division inside for individual fingers, so that children feel like they are wearing finger gloves.

For smaller children, most parents reach for mittens, but for larger children, finger gloves are usually preferred.

Children's winter gloves waterproof and not waterproof

Not waterproof gloves - They are made of, for example, wool, fleece or leather. They are not designed for rain or snow. They are mainly used for thermal insulation and are suitable for the city. Some cheap, unbranded gloves that look waterproof can also not be waterproof. Pay attention to this when choosing. Often they may only have a surface treatment to prevent them from getting wet, which will only last for a while or until the first wash.

Waterproof children's winter gloves - these are using either coating or membrane. Gloves with coating are cheaper, resist water well, but are slightly less breathable.
Membrane children's winter gloves are a slightly higher investment, but they are both waterproof and breathable, so your hands sweat less. Sweat is wicked away from the membrane winter glove to the outside. Because of these features, children usually only need one pair per day, which offsets their higher price.

Children's winter gloves - insulation

Children's winter gloves provide varying degrees of insulation depending on the material used to make them. Always choose reasonably warm gloves. Beware, however, that the thicker the gloves, the warmer they will be. Modern materials can hold heat very well even in a thin layer. For example, with Reima gloves you will often find a lightweight PrimaLoft® filling for softness and unsurpassed warmth.

For very cold weather or for cold-blooded children, you can get functional thin gloves that can be worn under winter gloves. They are made of either thermal underwear-like materials or fleece.

Children's winter gloves - classic and extended

Children's winter gloves can be either classic or extended to the forearm area. The extended version is particularly suitable for smaller children as it extends beyond the wrist and the end of the jacket sleeves, significantly eliminating the possibility of snow penetrating the sleeves. They also provide the child with more warmth. At the end of the extended part, the gloves are usually equipped with a drawstring at the wrist and can also be fastened with Velcro. Both children's finger gloves and mittens are available in the extended version.

Children's winter gloves - more details

  • Reinforced palm (sometimes fingers), more puncture resistant.
  • Reflective materials for better visibility and thus child safety.
  • Special carabiners or eyelet that can be attached to either the classic drawstring stretched sleeves.
  • Gloves with knuckle or wrist protection. This helps when riding in gates or when falling.
  • With a dirt repulsive surface so children can concentrate on having fun, just wipe the gloves with a cloth afterwards.

How to choose a size

Just like any other item of clothing, children's gloves must fit well, not fall off the hand, or pinch anywhere. It is therefore necessary to choose the appropriate size. The most ideal way is, of course, to try the gloves on the child. When you buy from us at Skibi, you can try the gloves on at home and then have up to 60 days to return or exchange them.

If a trial is not possible, you will need to orient yourself according to the size indicated on the glove.
There are basically four basic ways that manufacturers label the size of children's gloves.

1. The circumference of the hand (around the knuckles) is given in French inches (1 inch = 27,07 mm).

2. The length and circumference of the palm of the hand with the child's fingers (see example in figure)

3. Mark the sizes with the letters S, M, L, XL, etc. To determine the exact size needed here, you need a conversion chart.

4. Approximate age of the child for whom the glove is suitable. However, this method is only a guide.

For an idea, you can look at the size chart for the best-selling children's gloves from Reima:
